Tech giants like Samsung are not only focused on gadgets like smartphones but are also venturing into healthcare by developing devices that aim to improve people’s lives.

We’ve all seen Samsung’s innovative exoskeleton for hips, which enhances mobility and support. Now, Samsung has taken a significant step forward by patenting an exoskeleton specifically designed for people with weak knees. This advancement promises to bring new levels of independence and mobility to those in need.

In collaboration with David from @xleaks7, we’ve gathered evidence (in Korean) that Samsung is working on this cutting-edge technology. Let’s dive into the details of this new exoskeleton and explore how it could revolutionize knee support and rehabilitation.

The Problem

The patent addresses the issue of providing mechanical assistance to the knee joint for individuals who need support during physical activities, such as walking, standing, or other movements that involve bending and straightening the knee.

This can be particularly beneficial for people with knee injuries, elderly individuals, or those with mobility impairments.

How the Knee Assisting Device Works

The knee-assisting device operates through a sophisticated joint assembly featuring two rolling cams connected by lengthwise members.

These cams roll smoothly against each other during knee movements, providing consistent support and reducing friction. Elastic components between the cams absorb shocks and adjust to the user’s movements, enhancing flexibility and responsiveness.

The device is adjustable to ensure a secure and comfortable fit, supporting both the upper and lower parts of the leg to stabilize the knee and aid in proper alignment. This design effectively reduces strain on the knee, making it ideal for rehabilitation and daily use.

Rehabilitation

The device is particularly useful in rehabilitation settings, helping patients recover from knee surgeries or injuries by providing the necessary support during their recovery process.

The knee-assisting device is designed with modern connectivity features that allow it to interface with various gadgets and systems. This connectivity enables real-time monitoring and data analysis, which can be crucial for users and healthcare providers.

For instance, the device can be connected to a smartphone or tablet via Bluetooth, allowing users to track their movement patterns, assess their progress, and receive feedback through a dedicated app.
